As a psychotherapist and counsellor….

Life brings many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. As a psychotherapist and counsellor my role is to provide space and guidance to help you on your journey of self-discovery; to enable you to examine your life and make new, meaningful choices within it.

About me

Hello. I am Rebecca Mason. I am a UKCP registered Integrative Psychotherapist, and a member of the UKCP.

I was recently awarded my MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy by the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute and Staffordshire University. Prior to achieving this qualification, I had been practicing as a volunteer counsellor for four years, and achieved the PGDip in Integrative Psychotherapy in 2021.

I have worked as a volunteer counsellor for the Leicester Counselling Centre for over three years, and for Breathing Space (Melton Vineyard) in Melton Mowbray. I have recently also been working as a counselling assessor for the Leicester Counselling Centre. I also have a BA (Hons) degree in Health and Community Studies from Sheffield Hallam University, and a PGDip in Nursing Studies from Nottingham University. I worked as a registered general nurse (RGN) in respiratory and IV specialities for five years.

My therapeutic integrative approach to psychotherapy and counselling is underpinned by the relational, developmental model taught by the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute. My special interests include management of chronic illness, anxiety and self- esteem issues. My practice is guided by the UKCP and Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute Codes of Ethics.

I offer in person psychotherapy and counselling to adults, from my rooms in Sileby near Loughborough. I also offer online sessions via zoom, which allows for flexibility around personal commitments and circumstances.

How I work

I am dedicated to focusing on the building of a safe and empathic relationship with you, my client, with the aim of of long- term healthy change for you.

I work with adults of all ages who are facing challenges or perhaps feeling overwhelmed in their lives. You might be facing a recent trauma or event that is worrying you, or perhaps causing you anxiety, which you might require support and guidance with.

Equally, you might have been feeling unsettled or unhappy for some time, and finding it challenging to shift yourself out of the negative place that you're feeling stuck in. You may have experienced trauma a long time ago, and never had the courage to seek help and ask to be heard.

I am able to offer a sensitive, non- judgemental space in which to gently explore your feelings and make sense of your current way of being. I can then help you to make new, autonomous choices, and work towards a more balanced and content life.

My approach

Integrated theory

As an integrative psychotherapist, I draw upon certain aspects of different approaches to help me tailor my therapeutic interventions to your personal needs.

Theoretical approaches that I am influenced and guided by include Object Relations, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic and Neuroscience.

Self

My integrated approach facilitates the rediscovery of the true self, or the reintegration of parts of yourself that may have been missed or not acknowledged for a while, into your new true, stronger self.

I can help you to see yourself in a fresh new light, to gain a better understanding of yourself, and hopefully encourage you to allow yourself some self- compassion and care.

The therapeutic relationship

I feel that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is imperative to motivate change and improvement within the therapy. This is why it is so important to me to offer you a genuine, honest and real experience of working together.

I will offer you a non-judgemental, safe, confidential space, based on trust and true care, in which to explore your worries and challenges.

It is even more important that you feel at ease with me and that I am fulfilling your requirements, so I would encourage you to be open with me at all times, particularly if you feel that I am missing your needs in any way.

Sessions and fees

I offer a free non- obligatory introductory phone session for up to 15 minutes or contact via email or text to determine your needs. I will then need to undertake an initial in person or online assessment if we have not met before. This will last 50 minutes and costs £55.

Regular 50 minutes in person or online therapy sessions thereafter will be £55. They usually take place weekly and will be reviewed regularly to check for progress and your feelings regarding the therapy.

I provide a limited number of spaces for those on low- income or students. Please contact me to enquire regarding availability of these spaces.

Should you need to cancel an appointment, I will require 24 hours' notice. Otherwise, payment in full will be required. If our work is in person, it could temporarily move to online under certain circumstances, as agreed. Such circumstances might be if either one of us tests positive for covid, or has another virus, or if weather conditions prevent safe travel.

Payment can be made with cash or via a bank transfer.

Some frequently asked questions

How do psychotherapy and counselling differ?

Both psychotherapy and counselling are talking therapies, but psychotherapy is used to help clients long term, exploring long established feelings and patterns of behaviour at a deeper level that may be influencing your life today, and chronic issues from the past that negatively impact your experience of the present.

Counselling may be much shorter term and quite focused. It may be useful for helping with a specific issue or significant life event, such as a bereavement, traumatic event or loss.

Will psychotherapy or counselling suit me?

You may be experiencing some difficult emotions in response to your current situation, or because of events from the past that you have never had the opportunity to process or to share. I will provide a safe and confidential space in which to explore these. Your initial 50 minutes assessment will provide an opportunity for you to decide whether or not therapy is for you.

Will confidentiality be maintained?

Maintaining confidentiality is paramount during sessions and allows you the freedom to speak about whatever you wish, and in great depth, safe in the knowledge that whatever you share with me will not leave the room.

There will, however, be exceptional circumstances where I will be legally required to disclose the content of our therapy sessions. This would, for example, be if I was concerned that you were at risk of harming yourself or harming others, or where there might be a child protection issue, or risk of the undertaking of an illegal act.

How many sessions will I need?

We can work together to decide how long you might need, but you are the best judge of this, and I will support you with whatever feels right for you. I can provide short term therapy for just a handful of sessions if you feel that adequate change has occurred for you in this time, or I can support with long term therapy for months or years, if required.

How often will we meet?

Weekly attendance allows for continuity and depth when therapy first begins. There will be occasional circumstances when we cannot meet every week, such as when either of us is on holiday or unwell. but I am happy to offer every other week sessions for support once you are feeling more changed and settled.

How long will each session last?

Each session will last 50 minutes. The initial assessment will be 50 minutes also.

How much notice should I aim to provide if I need to cancel a session?

Continuity in attendance is imperative for the success of therapy, so I would encourage you to attend wherever possible and to make therapy a really important, valuable part of your week that’s just for you.

I appreciate that life can be complicated and unexpected changes in circumstances can occur, such as sudden ill- health. If you do need to cancel a session, please do aim wherever possible to give me at least 24 hours’ notice, otherwise the session will need to be paid for in full.

Can I still have my 50 minutes if I arrive late?

I will need to begin and end your session at the agreed times, so it is important that you arrive on time so that you can benefit from a full session.

How much does one session cost?

All sessions, including the initial assessment, will be £55, payable by cash or bank transfer on the day of the session.

Can I bring a friend or relative with me?

It is important that you feel relaxed and free to speak about whatever is troubling you. Having a friend or relative with you may prevent you from doing so.

They may have their own agenda for you. Even if this is just that they want to be supportive, this may prevent you from opening up fully and exploring thoughts or feelings that may trigger feelings of shame. You may censor yourself so as not to hurt the person with you.

Friends or relatives may even be part of the underlying issue that needs to be addressed and explored. For these reasons, I do not see clients accompanied by a friend or relative.

Can I choose when to end psychotherapy or counselling?

You are free to end sessions at any time, but I would encourage you to discuss your intention to end with me first, so that we can make the decision together and check that you are not rushing towards a premature ending. The decision needs to be right for you.

Which code of ethics do you follow?

I am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and thus adhere to their code of ethics. I have also followed the Ethical Code of the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) for five years during my training with them. My clinical work is also ethically and professionally supported by my UKCP registered supervisor.
